Day 4 - He will be called...

"...Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace" Isaiah 9:6

God has revealed Himself most obviously by what He calls Himself.

Jehovah / Yahweh -
(different pronunciations of consonant Hebrew letters  יהוה  /YHWH/)
"Existing One", "I AM", the sacred name of God (usually written "LORD")

"...anyone who comes to Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek him."  Hebrews 11:6
  • As you read through these names, write down a few that stand out to you.
Jehovah-raah - "Lord Shepherd"
Jehovah-jireh - "Lord Provider"
Jehovah-shalom - "Lord of Peace"
Jehovah-tsidkenu - "Lord of our Righteousness"
Jehovah-saboaoth - "Almighty, Lord of Hosts"
Jehovah-shammah - "The Lord is There"
Jehovah-nissi - "Lord our Banner"
Jehovah-mekoddishkem - "Lord who Sanctifies you"

Elohim - "God", Mighty Creator
El Elyon - "God Most High"
El Roi - "The God Who Sees"
El Olam - "Eternal/Everlasting God"
El Kanna or Qanna - "Jealous God" (Consumming or Passionate)

Adoniah (Hebrew) Kyrios (Greek) - "Lord, Master" (usually written "Lord")
Messiah (Hebrew) Christos (Greek) - "Anointed One", "Savior, Liberator, Christ" (One to Rescue)
Jesus, Joshua, Hoshea, Hosea (various pronounciations) - "Jehovah Saves"

In addition to their meanings, the inspired context tells us more a who He is.
  •  look up Exodus 3:14-15
If you have a few extra minutes look at the broader context.
  • read verses 10-15
  • What question does Moses ask in verse 11?
  • write the first three words of his question in your journal
  • What does he ask in verse 13?
Did you know that you can give God a name?
  • read Genesis 16:13-14
  •  write verse 13 in your journal and underline the name she gives God
  •  use the list above to find that name in Hebrew
verse 7 says, "the angel of the Lord found Hagar near a spring in the desert"
If you have time, answer these questions:
  • What was the name given to the well?
  • Do you see a similarity in the name of the well and the name Hagar called God?
(Incase you don't have both translations in your Bible, "Beer-lahai-roi" means "the well of the Living One who sees me")

PRAYER CHALLENGE:
(Today's challenges has several parts; if you are short on time, skip down to the last task.)

Who are you?
  • in your journal write down 12 of your names
It is fine to list roles (daughter, sister, etc.), but think about your spiritual gifts, your passions, your calling.

For example:
I am "Deborah" דְבוֹרָה

Deborah the Seeking One
Deborah the Word Study Lover
Deborah the Encourager...

This is who God has wired me, gifted me, called me to be.  As you make your list, ask the Lord to give you insight into who you are; He knows and designed you.
  • next, give God 12 Names (I think of these as "Nick Names".)
Before you begin writing your list, listen to the song "I Am" - Nicole Nordeman.  Think back over the timeline of your life. Who has He been to you and who do you need Him to be today?

  • Last and most important, as you pray over your TOP 12, call on Jehovah by name, using a fitting name for each request from listed above or one on your "nick name" list.
  • number from 1-12, write the names you use for each concern beside the corresponding number (but don't just make a list of names, talk to the Lord you know by name about what is on your heart)

EVENING MEDITATION:

Ponder these two verses as you listen to these songs.

"The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel --which means, God with us." Matthew 1:23

"Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord." Luke 2:11

Immanuel - Micheal Card

I hope you are in a private place and feel free to worship as you listen to this next song... eyes closed, snuggled in a blanket, on your knees, or on your face...  knowing that the Lord sees you and He is with you!
